Working over the years as a Citrix Consultant, I'd always had the intention of developing a Test Tool Evaluation Guide to help put some method to the madness of choosing the right test tool for Citrix fronted environments.

Unfortunately, I just never seemed to have the time until I decided to find the time. I wrote the test guide using my trusted Nokia E90 whilst commuting to and from projects in London.

Citrix Design

Testing is very important, as coming up with a Citrix design was easy enough but not knowing how to verify the design to cope with the variety and potential complexity of the applications being deployed, always meant the design was never set in concrete. The design is subject to change and only once the testing phases are complete, could I be comfortable in knowing my design was 'good to go'.

By choosing the right test tool, I could have confidence in ensuring the test phases especially those around non functional testing could be completed satisfactorily. Otherwise my design would not be validated correctly and this would create problems later.

There's some good test tools and some simply aren't good enough and it's these latter ones which were probably the main reason for me to develop the test tool evaluation guide. I want to help people make a more informed decision instead of just relying on sales talk and wishy washy whitepapers, which don't give a balanced view.

I make absolutely no commission from any of the test tool vendors so my advice is impartial and I don't mention any test tool vendors either in my guide. So this keeps the playing field level for all test tool vendors/developers.

The evaluation tests I use are designed to aid in determining whether a particular test tool maybe suitable for a Citrix environment. It's important to not only appreciate the criticality of ensuring adequate testing is done but also the right test tool is used, as bad choices can lead to bigger problems later on.

The information provided is based primarily on my experiences gained from several years of working with various technologies.
